There have been eloquent and passionate pleas that we should all come together and heal and support the new President elect. We should accept the results of the election and move on. We should stand united as a people and hope for the best.
My apologies, I’m simply not down with this course of action. I know tyranny when I see it.
As a double minority, I can speak on this. As a staunch progressive I was a harsher critic than many Democrats to President Barack Obama. Nevertheless, I have been and always will be extremely PROUD of the man. And make no mistake; the history books will be kind.
However, I have never seen in my lifetime a President so disrespected, so maligned, and so hated, all due to the fact that the man was Black. In the span of eight years I watched the Republican Party go from a veneer of conservatism to being openly xenophobic and racist. The party became the very epitome of obstruction in a time when the world was reeling from the great recession. A recession the middle class has yet to truly recover from.
And from the sidelines, who fanned the flames of racial dissension to an inferno by creating and instigating the “Birther” movement? Claiming that the President of the United States wasn’t even born in the country? A charlatan. A carnival sideshow barker. A “businessman” who has filed for bankruptcy six times. Someone who is apparently morally bankrupt as well. Someone who married three times, someone whose relationships with women has been tumultuous and predatory.
Someone who’s had it out for people of color his entire life. The man who spent $85,000 on full-page newspaper ads condemning the so-called “Central Park Five” in 1989. The man who was sued in 1973 along with his father for violating the Fair Housing Act, when they refused to rent to African Americans.
The man, who’s cheated, swindled and ruined hard working Americans too many times to count. The man whose had a lifetime in perfecting how to divide people instead of bringing them together?
You know who…none other than Donald J. Trump.
Trump isn’t really a Republican but he was willing to ride the racist, xenophobic wave that was cresting within the Republican Party. And what a wave it was…
This wave of ugly, and vile rhetoric didn’t just start with the 2016 election cycle; it’s been an eight-year long unending deluge. And in spite of all that, where economic positive change has been meager for the most of us, positive social change for so many minorities has been undeniable.
Barack Obama, the President of the United States EVOLVED. He didn’t hinder the progress, he accelerated it. And for that I am eternally grateful.
As for Hillary Clinton, I’m no big fan but the woman is certainly qualified to be President. But her opponent isn’t just a racist, fascist and a xenophobe he’s also a misogynist as well. And those “deplorable” behaviors he’s known for gave license to his constituents to speak out and act out across the country unafraid of retribution.
All because being “white” wasn’t so grand anymore.
All because of not getting a decent raise in their lifetimes.
All because their jobs were being shipped overseas or worse, handed over to a robot.
So they fell for the oldest trick in the book. Blame Muslims, blame Mexicans, blame African Americans, blame the LGBTQ community, and blame a woman’s right to chose on their problems.
And lo and behold the biggest pied piper of them all, Donald Trump is the one playing the tune they all wanted to hear.
And so the man who didn’t actually WIN the popular vote is the presumed President elect.
And so the man who has not yet won the Electoral College is the so-called President elect.
A body that in fact has YET TO ACTUALLY VOTE on the matter… A body that can still change their collective minds if it’s proven that he’s UNFIT to lead. Good luck finding the ammunition to support THAT charge. I mean seriously, there are so many sound bytes and tweets to sift through.
My personal favorite? “By the way, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks.” “Though the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know.” So let me get this straight. You can THREATEN your opponent’s life with gun violence and that isn’t grounds for being removed as a candidate? This is how the Republican party self governs protocol and decorum of its candidates?
So to put it all into perspective, this is the poor excuse of a man that we have to come together and rally behind as the new leader of the free world? A pussy grabbing racist who wants to ban an entire religion and build a wall to keep Mexicans out and have the country of Mexico pay for it?
This is how we do it 2016?
I think the fuck not. Nope. Nada.
I say folks have every right to protest every day up till the inauguration and beyond if they want to. I say to the leaders of the Democratic Party: Please show the same amount of “respect” that the Republicans showed President Obama for eight years. After all, the Republican Party and their “nominee” EARNED IT.
