December 19th should be a day of protest. Here’s why.

December 19th is the day the body of the Electoral College actually votes for the president elect. As most know, Hillary Clinton actually won the popular vote, but doesn’t have the electoral votes to win. Instead the most electoral votes have gone to Donald Trump.

Everyone has an opinion about the Electoral College, especially now. We actually live in a Republic not a Democracy. Supposedly, the Electoral College was designed to potentially stop a UNFIT candidate from becoming president.

In Theory, some electorates can change their vote. They could vote for another Republican. They could vote for Hillary Clinton. “Faithless electors” have done so in the past, so there is precedent.

But let’s be pragmatic.

That’s probably NOT going to happen since it’s the Republican electorates that would be the ones who would have to change their vote. And they would have to do it en masse. Highly unlikely.

However, A national general strike on the day they vote sends a clear message to everyone, both Republicans and Democrats that the candidate-elect is UNFIT TO LEAD.

No work. No school. No spending.

Yes you’ve voted.

Yes, some of you are taking to the streets in acts of civil disobedience to protest, which is your 1st amendment right. I implore all that can to continue to do so. But that’s not the only way to make a statement.

When oligarchs lose MONEY they tend to stop and take notice.

Not everyone who works can afford to stay home. Totally understandable. However not EVERYONE’S job is at risk. Folks have vacation days. Folks have sick days. Use them strategically.

You don’t have to protest in the street. Your voice can be heard by simply staying home.

Those that can should use social media to explain why they’re staying home.

Let me make myself clear, these are dangerous times, but you can do something, you can take a stand. You can fight fascism.

I implore progressive leaders all across the country to use this date [December 19th] to galvanize your base and present both short term and long-term solutions in our ongoing fight against the Republican Party.

In closing, if nothing else think of using December 19th as a dry run for January 20th. Inauguration Day. #J20 is the other date where folks are galvanizing a grassroots movement to protest the president by… NOT WORKING. NOT GOING TO SCHOOL. BY NOT SPENDING.

The election may be over. But progressives have only begun to fight.
